High Tech High Elementary
This mural adorns the entryway of the Clairmont-Mesa High Tech campus. Collectively, Ms. Gabrielle’s third grade art students and I brainstormed and sketched ideas with an aim to create a welcoming space that tells the story of their school’s community, and later painted the mural as a group.
A specific theme many student’s requested was was music and its ability to uplift us. Additionally positive messaging like “Be Kind” was a popular request. Several students sketched cozy treehouses nestled in the branches; a perfect place to read a good book.
As a final touch, I remodeled the sun faded little library adjacent to the wall, turning it into a replica of the treehouse in the mural. It was completed with a tiny tire swing. made from a dog toy and rope.
While painting, I invited students to share their thoughts on art, creativity and the ways it impacts their life. “I draw! I paint! I can do anything with art!” one student exclaimed. Check out the video below for more of their insights!
